Pre-Columbian Frog Clip-on Dangle Earrings

The inspiration for these non-pierced earrings is a pre-columbian frog in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian Exhibit. Between 1000-1200 in Chiriquί, Panama metallurgical techniques of mining, hammering, and casting gold to produce - among other items - jewelry were made. This pre-columbian frog was used as a symbol of rain and the gold it was made of symbolized wealth and spiritual power. By Museum Reproductions, the frogs are gold-plated over pewter. Hanging from a museum gold screwback clip they are 1 and 3/4 inches (44mm) long.
